Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sign up for announcements?
Yes, sign up for the audience mailing list or ask Allison to be added to our players mailing list.

Are you looking for new members?
Always!  Click on "Contact Us" and we'll get you set up.   You can also come and sit in on a rehearsal.  

Do I have to audition?
Never!

Are there dues?
No!

Where can I see the rehearsal schedule?
Lon posts the rehearsal schedule about 5 days ahead of time.

Can I go to a rehearsal just to observe?
Yes. All rehearsals are open to anyone who wants to observe or play along.

Do I have to be able to read music to join the group?
All our music is written in standard music notation. If you'd like to play with us but don't read music, we can help you learn.

What kind of music do you play?
We play music of many styles arranged for mandolin orchestra. This includes transcriptions of classical music, mandolin orchestra arrangements from the early 1900s, modern compositions for mandolin orchestra, and arrangements of popular tunes.

What instruments do you use in the group?
Mandolin, mandola, octave mandolin, mandocello, guitar, and bass.  Many of our shows feature flute or harmonica solos.

Where do you play?
We play at park concerts, senior homes, art festivals, churches, and other venues.

How many players do you have?
About twenty-five.

Do you have a smaller group for venues that are too small for the whole group?
Yes. Please write to Lon Hendricks for more information.

Are the musicians paid for performances?
Not usually, but we sometimes reimburse travel costs if a performance is far from home.

Who started the MMO and how long has it been in existence?
Jack El-Hai started the group in 1991.
